Plan what you'll earn, spend and save for any period, weekly, biweekly, by paycheck or monthly, then log your transactions and see your plan and your actual numbers side by side. A comparison dashboard sets two periods against each other, and two bonus calendars cover your recurring bills and your no-spend days.

What's inside

6-tab spreadsheet

  • Set Up: Set your currency, add up to two withdrawal categories of your own, like Bills or Debt, alongside income, expenses and savings, name up to 15 sub-categories under each, and list up to 10 payment methods.
  • Transactions Log: One row per transaction: the date, category, sub-category, payment method, a short description and the amount. An optional effective-month column files a transaction under a different month, such as income received early for next month.
  • Monthly Budget: Set the dates you're budgeting for, your start balance, and what you plan to earn, spend and save in each sub-category. As you log transactions, the actual amounts fill in beside your budget, with the difference for each sub-category and anything over or under highlighted. Summary cards show your unallocated budget, total spent and total savings, charts show your cash flow, your spending by payment method and by date, and your largest withdrawals, and a filtered list shows the period's transactions. Copy the tab for each new period and change the dates.
  • Comparison Dashboard: Two date ranges side by side, each with its own start balance, comparing your actual income, spending and savings by category and sub-category, with payment methods and top withdrawals for each. It works from your logged transactions, with no budget figures.
  • Bonus Calendar: A monthly calendar of your recurring income, bills and subscriptions, each in its own color, alongside your tasks. Set each one as one-time, weekly, every two weeks or monthly, and it appears on its due dates for a year from the date you set. Today's Top Reminders and Upcoming Transactions sit above the calendar.
  • Bonus No-Spend Calendar: Twelve months at a glance, with every day you spent nothing marked in color, counted from your own transactions. Leave out the sub-categories that you don't want to count, like rent, and set a monthly goal to track against.

How it works
  1. Open the PDF and follow the link to your template, signed in to a Google account.
  2. Make a copy to your own Google Drive, then start with the instructions on the first tab.
  3. Set up your categories and payment methods on Set Up, then log transactions on the Transactions Log. Monthly Budget, the Comparison Dashboard and both calendars update on their own.

Specs & limits
  • Transactions Log: up to 1,005 transactions.
  • Monthly Budget: the spending-by-date chart covers up to 31 days and up to 3 categories at a time. The filtered transaction list shows up to 205 transactions.
  • Comparison Dashboard: sub-categories show for one category at a time, chosen from a dropdown.
  • Bonus Calendar: each day shows up to 5 items, and a day with more shows 4 and a count of the rest. Up to 36 tasks and up to 20 entries in each of the three recurring tables. Today's Top Reminders shows up to 6 and Upcoming Transactions the next 3.

I've been using a simple excel spreadsheet for my income and expenses and have wanted to upgrade to something more substantial. I though about quickbooks but I don't want the monthly fee and I also don't need anything that complex. This is perfect! I have been utilizing different budget templates for years and this is the only one so far that I didn't need to edit a single cell. Everything is laid out clearly in the "set up" page and you can customize it to fit your needs by simply following instructions. FAQ

Where do I start?

On Set Up, with your currency, categories, sub-categories and payment methods. Then log your transactions on the Transactions Log and set your dates and budget on Monthly Budget.

Can I budget weekly or by paycheck instead of monthly?

Yes. Each Monthly Budget tab covers the start and end dates you set, so it can be a week, two weeks, a pay period or a month. Copy the tab for each new period.

Does unspent money carry over to the next period?

Not on its own. Each budget tab starts from the start balance you enter for it, so enter what's left as the next period's start balance.

Does it work with my currency?

Yes. Set your currency symbol on Set Up and every tab uses it. The template works in one currency throughout.

What is the difference between the Budget Planner and Income & Expenses Tracker?

The Budget Planner is for setting budget amounts for any period you choose, then comparing those amounts with actual transactions.

The Income & Expenses Tracker is for recording and reviewing actual money coming in and going out, without entering budget amounts.

Both include a Transactions Log, a Comparison Dashboard for two date ranges, a calendar for one-off tasks and recurring income, bills, and subscriptions, and a No-Spend Calendar.

Can my partner use it too?

Yes. Share your copy from Google Sheets with the people you budget with, and everyone works in the same file.

Can I buy it as a gift?

Yes. The license passes to the person you give it to, and you can set it up for them before handing it over.
